Konus-Wind:

Konus-Wind: Results for 30+ Years in Space

Dmitry SVINKIN

Alferov University, Ioffe Institute
Abstract

Konus-Wind is a joint Russian-US experiment with the Russian Konus  gamma-ray spectrometer on-board the NASA WIND spacecraft. The instrument has been successfully operating for more than 30 years since its launch in November 1994. Due to location in interplanetary space, it has been observing entire sky with stable background and providing the unique  information on almost all bright gamma-ray transients in the wide energy band, being the key vertex of the Interplanetary network. We present an  overview of the most important Konus-Wind results on gamma-ray bursts  (GRBs), soft gamma-repeaters (SGRs), and solar flares along with a brief  history of GRB and SGR studies at Ioffe Institute in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Dr. Dmitry SVINKIN is an astrophysicist specializing in high-energy time-domain astronomy, in particular gamma-ray bursts, magnetars, and solar flares. He is currently an Associate Professor at Alferov University and a Researcher at the Ioffe Institute, where he has worked since 2007 in the Laboratory for Experimental Astrophysics. He earned his PhD in Astrophysics from the Ioffe Institute in 2016, following MSc and BSc degrees in Physics from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Dr. Svinkin is a member of the Konus-Wind team and co-lead of the Interplanetary Network (IPN). He also collaborates with a number of multi-messenger astronomy facilities, including Fermi,Swift, GECAM, Einstein probe, MASTER telescope network, ZTF, and LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA gravitational wave observatories. In 2024, Dr. Svinkin joined Alferov University as an Associate Professor; he teaches X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy and mentors students.
