Challenges of the Near-Earth Space

摘要 Abstract

Near-Earth space is door to Universe and the stage of increasingly active exploration. It is especially important area for research because it is one of key elements of the Solar-terrestrial chain, translating effects of solar activity on Earth. It also allows to study basic physical effects in the hot colllisionless plasma inaccessible in laboratories but typical in space. Its studies began at the dawn of space era with the very first satellites. Оn the first stages we addressed the large-scale map of the solar wind-magnetosphere system, now we continue with small-scale plasma processes. Another important aspect is the critical need of international cooperation. Multipoint measurements are required to determine “cause-consequence” relationships of different events. Spacecraft nations are placed in various orbits complementing each other. One can remember successful ISTP and IACG programs, including Interball-Geotail and Cluster-Double Star collaborations. However still there are a lot of open questions related with unpredictable behavior of complex systems. It appears that a new era of international collaborative missions is necessary to advance our knowledge. In particular it is timely to renew the conduct of the active experiments.

Dr. Anatoli PETRUKOVICH is director of Space Research Institute (IKI) of Russian Academy of Sciences. The mission of the institute is to conduct a world level research and hardware development in the field of fundamental and applied space sciences and technology, including lunar exploration. Dr. Anatoli Petrukovich received a honours degree in Physics and Applied Math from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1990. In 1990 he joined Space Research Institute as researcher and later worked at the positions of senior researcher, head of space weather lab and head of space plasma physics department. In 2018 he was elected as the new IKI director. Since 2011 he is corresponding member, since May 2025 – full member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr Petrukovich scientific interests are related with dynamics of the Earth’s magnetosphere and space weather. He is the author of over 200 publications with more than 4000 citations in Web of Science. Dr Petrukovich is professor in Russian HSE University. He is now an Editor-in-chief of Russian «Cosmic Research» journal. He is the head of of solar-terrestrial section in Space Council (advisory board in Russian academy of sciences for space science)
